Part of the spirit used in The Glenlivet 12 YO is matured in French oak casks. George Smith, a local farmer who had been illegally distilling, founded the Glenlivet Distillery in 1824, legalising the illegal production of whisky in the area. Soon other Speyside distillers began to use the name “Glenlivet” on their casks. In 1884, it was officially recognised by law that only the original single malt whisky could be called “The Glenlivet”.
